Dust or toner on the small sensor windows near the transfer area often causes this. Less often, the transfer belt or sensor hardware itself has failed.
Safe things you can try
- Turn the machine off with the main power switch.
- Open the front cover using the side levers.
- On the inside of the front door, find the long roller that spans most of the door width. Just above the center of that roller are two small sensor windows arranged in a shallow V.
- Gently wipe those windows with a soft tissue lightly dampened with water, then dry them with a second clean tissue. Do not scratch the windows.
- Close the cover, turn the machine on, and wait for Ready.
Do not do these
- Do not remove internal units or spray liquid into the machine.
- Do not wipe photoconductor drums or belts with anything abrasive.
Never enter service mode or clear safety codes yourself. Those steps can damage the machine or leave a safety lock uncleared.
When to call for service
If cleaning the sensor windows does not clear SC400, the image-density sensor, shutter, or transfer belt may need service.
